Digital Photography Workflow Outline

The introduction of digital photography has brought a lot of changes to the workflow of photographers. The new digital photography workflow has brought significant changes by removing some of the old steps and introducing some new steps. Moreover some steps have considerably widened in their scope.

The new workflow has eliminated the very first step of the old workflow. The very first step in the older workflow was to load the film in the camera. This has been eliminated with the introduction of digital camera. There is no need to load the film in the camera as the digital camera does not use the film to create the image. All you have to do is load the battery and switch on the camera and you are ready to go.

The next step is to do the composition of the image. The key thing to be considered here is that you have to follow the rule of three thirds. Compose the image by drawing three imaginary lines in the frame horizontally and three vertically. Make sure that you balance the image in such a manner that none of the frame is filled more than any other part except the part in the dead center. With your composition right you have to set all the other parameters like focus and lighting and fire the flash.

This is followed by review of the photograph which you took. Nikon digital camera and almost any other camera come with a small LCD screen, which can be used to review the image instantly. If you are satisfied, move to the next step, if you are not satisfied because of any reason like mis-composition of portraits or color problem or blurring, you can reshoot the image.

This is followed by import of image from the digital camera to the computer. Depending upon your camera this can be done using many ways. You can get a direct USB or Firewire connection. Some cameras come with Bluetooth and some with WiFi. Most of the digital cameras however use memory cards which can be connected to computer using card reader. From here on importing is a mere copy paste job.

Once you have the images in the computer you can edit the image, resize it, correct red eyes etc. After you are satisfied with the image you can go for printing, share it using email, online photo sharing or using blogs etc. This is another area where the workflow has changed significantly. You get much more options for both editing and sharing.

This was just an outline of the digital photography workflow. To get a deeper understanding of the entire process of digital photography, you would have to attend digital photography training and workshops.
